This project will help to keep the Town thriving through improving the attractiveness and safety of Wednesbury town centre. The project builds on the improvements already made through the Wednesbury High Street Heritage Action Zone which included improvements to Market Place.
This means more benches that are more comfortable, more bins to minimise littering and more trees and planting. The proposals also include brighter and better-quality paving and improved lighting.
The consultation for the Public Realm improvements took place 29th February -11th March 2024. Results from the consultation have been used to finalise plans for improvements in the Town.
Phase 1 of the public realm improvement works focus on Union Street. This phase includes upgraded highway drainage, new natural sandstone paving, new trees, and new street furniture such as benches and bins. The lighting will also be upgraded and feature lanterns in a more traditional design.
The initial works will focus on the end of Union Street closest to the bus station and the central portion of the street, followed by work either side of the centreline. The opposite end of Union Street will be the last section to be completed.
Phase 1 started in August 2024 and will last for approximately 10 weeks. In total there are 6 phases of works in the Town Centre over 32 weeks. The work is expected to be completed in March 2025.
Please see the Public Realm and Urban Greening FAQ’s information here.
The project has also involved a detailed review of the Town Centre to consider future opportunities for the Town and derelict sites. This is referred to as a Masterplan, for more information on the Masterplan please here.
A masterplan is a document that guides how places will change over period of time and helps with decision-making about how that will happen. Having a masterplan is a useful tool that will help access funding for improvements and regeneration in the town from the UK government and elsewhere. The draft masterplan has been shaped by gathering input from previous engagement and consultation events, as well as considering insights from assessment of local needs and future potential. The consultation for the Masterplan took place 7th May -11th June 2024.
