West Bromwich is celebrating the successful completion of the restoration and renovation project at two of its most iconic Grade II listed buildings – West Bromwich Town Hall and Central Library.
The works, which began in November 2023, have been meticulously executed, preserving the historical essence while ensuring the structures are fit for future generations.
Funded by the Government’s Towns Fund programme, this project has revitalised these landmark buildings through a series of essential repairs and enhancements. The comprehensive works were completed by contactor Morgan Sindall and include: –
- High-level stone and brick repairs to the main chimney, ensuring the structural integrity of this historic feature.
- New detailed timber work and decoration to the exterior, restoring the original charm and character of the buildings.
- Extensive lead work to the finial and dome of the cupola, highlighting the architectural grandeur that defines the Town Hall.
- Urgent and significant repairs to the Town Hall roof, addressing long-standing issues and securing the building against future weather damage.
- Internal alterations to form a new Changing Places Facility
Beyond the physical restoration, the project has delivered incredible social value to the community, led by the contractor responsible for the works. Morgan Sindall Construction achieved a remarkable local spend, with 41% of funds spent within a 20-mile radius. 135 local people contributed to the project’s success, including 34 Sandwell residents. This was supported by 18 work experience students, a graduate site manager, and 7 new apprentices specialising in scaffolding, construction, joinery and electrical work.
The project also engaged with educational institutions such as Sandwell College and Birmingham City University, offering 84 hours of educational engagement activities, including several site tours, college presentations, and lectures.
The community benefitted from 252 hours of support through various initiatives, including fundraising for the Kaleidoscope Plus Group in 2023 and 2024, supporting the Sandwell Children Trust Fun Day, assisting care leavers into employment, donating equipment to Sandwell Visually Impaired and the Central Library Welcoming Spaces initiative. The project to date has invested over £24,000 back into the community through donations and fundraising efforts for local charities.

Councillor Peter Hughes, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Infrastructure, said: “The Town Hall and Central Library have long been at the heart of West Bromwich, serving as key cultural and civic hubs. With the renovations complete, these buildings are now ready to continue their legacy, offering improved facilities and a welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
“The fact that so much of the work was delivered by local people and local suppliers show how this is truly a local, community asset.”
