With new extensions under way in Birmingham and Wolverhampton city centres and a brand-new line to Dudley town centre, more trams are needed to serve passengers across the region. To keep pace with this growth, the depot site on Potters Lane, Wednesbury is undergoing a major redevelopment that will more than double its capacity. This will ensure the fleet of state-of-the-art Metro vehicles can be securely stored, efficiently maintained, and easily manoeuvred around the yard.
The redevelopment includes:
- Expanded storage facilities to house a larger fleet
- Extended and upgraded workshops and maintenance areas
- A new tram wash facility
- A modern operations centre
- Improved staff facilities to support a growing workforce
In total, the project is expected to create around 150 new jobs, further boosting the local economy.
The depot expansion is being led by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), part of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and owner of the Metro system. Construction is being carried out by the Midland Metro Alliance, the consortium delivering all Metro infrastructure improvements across the region. Funding for the scheme comes from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement – a key investment in the future of public transport across the West Midlands.
The expansion at Wednesbury is a vital step in preparing the Metro network for the years ahead. With more trams, better facilities, and space to grow, the depot will play a central role in ensuring fast, reliable, and sustainable transport for the people of the West Midlands.
