  • Construction begins on new cycle lanes in Oldbury

Oldbury is set to become even more bike friendly as construction has officially commenced on the installation of new cycle lanes in Oldbury. This project is part of the town’s ongoing commitment to sustainable transport and is being delivered under the Governments Rowley Regis Towns Fund Programme, as parts of Oldbury were identified within the Government boundary map.

The Oldbury works, which began in August 2024, are scheduled for completion by October 2024. In addition to new segregated cycle lanes adjacent to the A457 Oldbury Ringway between its link with Dudley Rd A457 and Churchbridge A4034, the project includes the resurfacing of footpaths and installing associated signage, ensuring safer and more accessible routes for both cyclists and pedestrians.

This development will help link other existing and future routes including the A457 towards Smethwick and Birmingham to the east, West Bromwich to the north, Tipton/ Dudley to the west and Blackheath to the south, as well as the local canal network (National Cycle Route 81).

It is intended that the segregated cycle route and improved footways and crossing facilities will give residents the confidence to embed cycling and walking into their travel arrangements, which will in turn have positive impacts on air quality and the environment, as well as the health and wellbeing of residents who choose to walk and cycle. The route improvements will consist of:

  • Segregated cycle tracks, ensuring cyclists are separated from both pedestrians and traffic.
  • Upgraded crossing facilities for both pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Adjustment of kerb lines allowing the widening of footways.

These works form part of the Rowley Regis Connected project, where improvements are underway at Moor Lane in Rowley Regis and plans in place to improve connectivity in Cradley Heath.
