Multistory’s Green Roots on the Meadow returns on Saturday 16 August 2025
Everyone is invited to Green Roots on the Meadow for a free, public event to celebrate one of Sandwell’s green spaces, taking place on Saturday 16 August 2025, 12pm–2pm, behind Primark in New Square shopping Centre, West Bromwich (on the corner of Walsall Street, opposite Tiny Tots Academy).
Part of Sandwell Council’s Towns Fund Urban Greening programme, Green Roots on the Meadow is being delivered by Multistory, in partnership with Sandwell Council, New Square West Bromwich and Birmingham & Black Country Wildlife Trust.
The event will bring together young people, residents, artists and partners to celebrate and steward one of Sandwell’s green spaces plus there’ll be complimentary snacks!
Returning for a second summer gathering, the celebration will highlight the ongoing care of the meadow that was planted in September 2023 and will feature the unveiling of an exciting new artwork created by local young people working with community artists.
We’re looking forward to sharing this year’s Green Roots on the Meadow to mark the end of Sandwell Council’s Urban Greening programme that is a testament to the strength of creativity and community action in shaping a more sustainable, natural and connected urban environment.
What’s on Offer
Creative Workshops and Family Activities
Visitors of all ages can take part in free, drop-in art and nature-themed workshops that will explore themes of sustainability, nature and the importance of caring for our local environment.
Live Music and Performances
Enjoy live music throughout the afternoon by Bostin’ Brass and a wonderful pop-up opera performance by Birmingham Opera Company.
New Outdoor Art Commission by Juneau Projects
A highlight of this year’s event will be the launch of a new commission by Juneau Projects, developed in collaboration with young people from YMCA West Bromwich. This outdoor exhibition of wildlife-inspired ceramics will be installed as a trail across the Meadow, inviting people to explore and to celebrate local creativity and biodiversity.
Meadow Cutting Demonstration
The Birmingham & Black Country Wildlife Trust will lead a wildflower meadow cutting demonstration – an essential part of meadow maintenance that encourages biodiversity. People of all ages can learn about the importance of traditional cutting techniques and how they support the ongoing health of the meadow.
Alice O’Rourke, Programme Manager at Multistory, said:
“This year’s event is all about creativity and connection – between people and place, art and nature. We’re thrilled to be unveiling a new community-led artwork by Juneau Projects and welcoming everyone back to the Meadow to celebrate what we can grow and create together.”
Councillor Peter Hughes, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Infrastructure, said: “It’s wonderful to have this green meadow right in the heart of West Bromwich town centre and this event is a great way to involve everyone and celebrate the benefits of this Towns Fund project for the local community. It promises to be a lively occasion with some fantastic entertainment and activities for all ages.”
